New research reveals that people who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a leading health publication shows that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users purchasing these treatments must be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a return to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists note that people who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the jabs explains the accelerated weight return.
These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Condition?
Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have come off the medication explain a intense resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if something activating and you become extremely hungry," said an individual.
The struggle is compounded if users have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Use is higher among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers stress that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated behavioural changes.
