A minimum of 13 people perish and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major government projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” stated the head of state.

The president confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose term concluded the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his government's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, defying expectations to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked significant concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was requested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."

In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in total accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and management of these national projects.
